"The idea of Prayer Machine
came to me a long while ago after reading Roger Zelazny's science-fiction
novel Lord of Light where humans re-enact Indian myths
on a distant planet." In the title track Aidan Andrew Dun reads the beginning of Canto 2 of his poem 'Universal'. The Indian music shares many elements with western medieval music. It is modal, monodic and melodically based upon the repetitions and minute transformations of small patterns even though, especially in classical forms like the raga, pieces can last for a very long period of time. This cyclical way of making music has now become very appealing. The music in this record is a mix or even a remix of western electronic sounds with Indian samples. In a way Prayer Machine is quite close to Indian filmi music (film music) where Indian melodic, rhythmic and instrumental elements are freely combined with western orchestrations. But this time made from a different
angle : from an European point of view. |
